WEEKLY E-MESSENGER FROM REFORMATION LUTHERAN CHURCH

For the Week Beginning September 1, 2017

Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

THE WEEK AT REFORMATION

Sunday – 9:30 a.m. Service of Holy Communion

Wednesday – 10 a.m. Eucharist followed by Prayer Ministry

Wow – thank you for the amazing response to our school kit appeal – we are on target to reach our goal of 100 kits and may even have extra!!  We have received a Thrivent Action Team Event card which will be used to purchase the bags and will help cover the cost of shipping the kits to Maryland.

There is no Wednesday evening worship service this week!! Our Saturday evening worship services resume on Saturday, September 9th.

In the next week or so the format of this weekly will undergo a revision. We hope to streamline it and only show the “news” of the week.  The monthly newsletter will continue to have the calendar, upcoming events for the month, and other news.

NEXT SUNDAY IS RALLY DAY/GOD’S WORK OUR HANDS DAY, START OF SCHOOL, BLESSING OF OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR BACKPACKS, INSTALLATION OF OUR NURSERY AND SCS VOLUNTEERS, ASSEMBLING SCHOOL KITS AND A BRUNCH IN THE GREAT ROOM – PLEASE PLAN TO BE HERE!! Lots of fun and fellowship to be had!!

If you or a loved would like to be added to the church prayer lists, please call the church office (732-229-9180), email the church at reformationwlb@gmail.com  or leave Pastor Matt a note.  Please help keep the list up to date by sharing the good news of progress and recovery.

GOD’S WORK OUR HANDS DAY – IT’S NOT TOO LATE!! You can still take a hand off the “work to do” side of the bulletin board in the gathering area, do the chore – alone or with family, and move the hand to the “completed” side of the bulletin board.  How many hands can we get moved before next week?

UPCOMING EVENTS FOR THE FALL IN DATE ORDER

SIGN-UP SHEETS IN THE BINDER IN THE GATHERING AREA

500TH COMMEMORATION OF THE REFORMATION EVENTS

  1. Sunday, September 10th at 11:00 a.m. – Rally Day/God’s Work Our Hand’s Day Luncheon and assembly of school kits for Lutheran World Relief. Help is needed with side dishes, salads, and desserts.  We will have cold cut platters and lots of other goodies we hope! Still could use a couple of desserts.
  2. Sunday, September 10th at 2 p.m. here at Reformation – A new movie created for the 500th Commemoration of the Reformation has been issued.  It is called “Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World.”  This feature-length film revisits the dramatic moments that shaped Luther’s life while examining his quest to share the good news of the freeing love of Jesus Christ.  The film is sponsored by Thrivent and in collaboration with the ELCA.  The viewing is made available through special arrangements with participating theaters.  In other words this movie will not be shown through conventional commercial channels.

The film vividly portrays the key moments in Luther’s story: the lightning storm that nearly killed him, the bleak self-punishment of his time in the monastery, the theological breakthrough that reset Christian thought and his ongoing drive to reconnect the church to its original anchor.

In a quest for authenticity, the movie was filmed in the castles, monasteries and cobblestone streets of Eastern Europe.  Luther scholars were involved in all aspects of the production to further ensure historical accuracy, including ELCA theologians Richard Perry, Kirsi Stjerna, Mary Jane Haemig, Kathryn Johnson, Jane Strohl, Mark Tranvik, Vitor Westhelle, and Timothy Wengert.  Every sentence Luther speaks in the film is taken from his writings, talks and sermons.

  1. Saturday, September 23 at 5 p.m. – Dinner Church – Our Saturday evening Service of Holy Communion done in the great room around a pot luck 3 course meal.
  2. Sunday, September 24 at 2 p.m. at The Center in Asbury Park – CALLING ANYONE WHO LOVES (OR EVEN LIKES) TO COOK – 4 people needed to head up our team of volunteers to plan and cook a meal with Precious Blood’s team of 4 at The Center for approximately 40 people. Arrive at The Center at 2 to prep and cook. Dinner is served at 4. We’re planning music and singing in the gardens after dinner. More are welcome to come and help plus enjoy the dinner, music and singing.
  3. Saturday, October 14th – Hymn Fest and Service of the Word at 3:30 in the sanctuary followed by a pot luck Oktoberfest here at Reformation in the great room at 5 p.m.  This event will be opened to Precious Blood, Holy Trinity Red Bank and other Lutheran congregations in the area.  Because of limited seating for the Oktoberfest in the great room, we will be issuing tickets based on those who sign up.  It’s imperative that you sign up as soon as possible if you plan to attend the Oktoberfest!! On 8/31 we will be opening this to all the other congregations.
  4. Sunday, October 29th – Reformation Sunday – Brunch in the Great Room at 11 a.m.
  5. Sunday, October 29th – Joint event with Precious Blood Catholic Church, Monmouth Beach 2 p.m. to explore the Reformation from both perspectives followed by refreshments.  This event will be a worship service based on Pope Francis and Bishop Munib Younan, president of The Lutheran World Federation’s service of Common Prayer for the Joint Catholic-Lutheran Commemoration of the Reformation in Lund, Sweden on Oct. 31, 2016.

THE CAMP CONNECTION

CROSS ROADS CAMP AND RETREAT CENTER

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO SIGN UP –

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S RETREAT AT CROSSROADS

Crossroads Camp and Retreat Center has scheduled their synod wide women’s retreat for 9/29-10/1 and 10/13-10/15.  Several of us here at Reformation have chosen to attend the 9/29-10/1 retreat to avoid a conflict with the annual CROP Walk which is 10/15.  We invite all women of the congregation to attend – check out the retreat center on their website at www.crossroadsretreat.com Just know it’s first come, first serve so if you are thinking of attending, you need to register as soon as possible.

Then, men – for the first time ever there is a men’s retreat weekend on 10/20-10/22 which will be led by Pastor Bruce Davidson.  It will be a new experience for all and promises to be as equally fun and spiritually renewing as the women’s retreats have been.  All men of the congregation are invited to register for this retreat – check out the retreat center on their website too at www.crossroadsretreat.com

COMMUNITY HAPPENING

We’ve been invited to join Precious Blood for a Prayer Fair on Friday evening September 22nd at 7 p.m. It will be a time to learn about different forms of prayer – labyrinth, centering prayer, meditation, Taize, etc.  All are invited and welcomed – bring a friend!!
