PLEASE NOTE: As a reflection of our trust that God does indeed hear our prayers, prayer requests will be kept on the prayer list spoken each weekend for a period of four weeks.  Should you wish to have someone placed back onto the list or to have their name remain on the list for an additional four weeks, please contact the church office or leave a note on Debbie’s desk. Names on the prayer list printed above and in the monthly messenger will stay on indefinitely until you share with us the good news of recovery or progress enough to be removed from the list

SCHOOL SUPPLIES:  Continuing until God’s Work Our Hands Day, 9/10, our Social Ministry team will be collecting specific school supplies for Lutheran World Relief School Kits

We’ll include the following items in each School Kit:

4 Notebooks, 1 ruler, 1 sharpener, 5 pencils, 1 blunt school scissor, 1 eraser, 5 blue pens, 1 box of 24 crayons.  Please donate whatever items you can (look for the marked bin in the gathering area) and then on God’s Work Our Hands Sunday, 9/10 we will have bags and put the kits together.

GOD’S WORK OUR HANDS DAY – Have you had a chance to check out the bulletin board in the gathering area?  Sue Homza has created an amazing bulletin board and what makes it so amazing (besides the great creativity) is its intent!!  There are hands on one side of the board with suggested “chores or jobs” one might choose to do between now and September 10th – the official God’s Work Our Hands Day. The other side has space for the completed “chore or job” hands to be placed.  The goal is empty the first side and completely fill the other side with finished jobs!! There are simple jobs, harder jobs, chores for children, something for everyone!

500TH COMMEMORATION OF THE REFORMATION EVENTS

  1. Sunday, September 10th – A new movie created for the 500th Commemoration of the Reformation has been issued. It is called “Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World.”  This feature-length film revisits the dramatic moments that shaped Luther’s life while examining his quest to share the good news of the freeing love of Jesus Christ.  The film is sponsored by Thrivent and in collaboration with the ELCA.  The viewing is made available through special arrangements with participating theaters.  In other words this movie will not be shown through conventional commercial channels.

The film vividly portrays the key moments in Luther’s story: the lightning storm that nearly killed him, the bleak self-punishment of his time in the monastery, the theological breakthrough that reset Christian thought and his ongoing drive to reconnect the church to its original anchor.

In a quest for authenticity, the movie was filmed in the castles, monasteries and cobblestone streets of Eastern Europe.  Luther scholars were involved in all aspects of the production to further ensure historical accuracy, including ELCA theologians Richard Perry, Kirsi Stjerna, Mary Jane Haemig, Kathryn Johnson, Jane Strohl, Mark Tranvik, Vitor Westhelle, and Timothy Wengert.  Every sentence Luther speaks in the film is taken fromhis writings, talks and sermons.

Reformation Lutheran Church, with Holy Trinity Red Bank, is exploring having an early afternoon viewing of the film at HERE AT REFORMATION USING OUR BIG SCREEN TELEVISION on Sunday September 10 AT 2pm.  More information to follow as the details are worked out. (The movie theater won’t do the viewing on the weekends at all so we are going to join with Holy Trinity Red Bank here!)

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S RETREAT AT CROSSROADS

Crossroads Camp and Retreat Center has scheduled their synod wide women’s retreat for 9/29-10/1 and 10/13-10/15.  Several of us here at Reformation have chosen to attend the 9/29-10/1 retreat to avoid a conflict with the annual CROP Walk which is 10/15.  We invite all women of the congregation to attend – check out the retreat center on their website at www.crossroadsretreat.com Just know it’s first come, first serve so if you are thinking of attending, you need to register as soon as possible.

Then, men – for the first time ever there is a men’s retreat weekend on 10/20-10/22 which will be led by Pastor Bruce Davidson.  It will be a new experience for all and promises to be as equally fun and spiritually renewing as the women’s retreats have been.  All men of the congregation are invited to register for this retreat – check out the retreat center on their website too at www.crossroadsretreat.com
